About Spell Bee Free

Last updated

Spell Bee Free is a free word puzzle site built around one idea: you should be able to play the honeycomb game as much as you want.

The daily newspaper puzzle gives you one board a day. That’s a great habit, but plenty of players finish it with their coffee and want more. So we built a version with no daily cap. Press New puzzle and you get a fresh hive, as many times as you like.

What you’ll find here

  • The game. A daily board everyone shares, plus unlimited mode with a brand-new hive every time.
  • Today’s answers, hints and pangram. Updated automatically a few minutes after the NYT Spelling Bee goes live at 3:00 a.m. Eastern.
  • The answer archive. Every past puzzle we’ve recorded, with the full word list and hint grid.
  • A Spelling Bee solver. Type any seven letters to see every word and pangram, or switch to hints-only mode.
  • Guides. Rules for beginners, ranks and points, pangram methods and a daily routine for reaching Genius.

Who runs the site

The site is edited by Richard Elson, who writes the guides, checks them against real puzzles from our archive, and maintains the word list. If something on the site looks wrong, he wants to hear about it: use the contact page.

How our word list works

Our game and solver use a list of about 30,000 English words built from open dictionaries and filtered by real-world usage. We remove proper nouns, abbreviations, hyphenated words and offensive terms. Uncommon words are accepted as bonus words. The daily answers pages show the official NYT list for that day.

Independent and free

Spell Bee Free is independent. We’re not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to The New York Times, and “Spelling Bee” puzzles from the NYT belong to their owner. Everything on this site is free to use, with no account required.
